Industry Statistics and Facts
-
Only 37% of drivers
use an air gauge
-
Only 22% of drivers
check their tires with an air gauge before they leave on a trip
-
Half of all drivers
don't think it is their responsibility to check their tires (Read
your DOT manuals)
-
It takes
approximately 20 minutes to check and adjust the air pressures on an
18 wheeler
-
Industry averages
show failures on the road costing an average of $180 plus the cost
of the tire, parts, damage to vehicle, and an average of 2.5 hours
of downtime.
-
70% of all road
failures were for tires located on trailer positions. This indicates
an overall lack of preventive maintenance on trailers, often
overlooked for various reasons
-
If you assign air
pressure maintenance to your mechanic as 80% of all fleets do, it is
impossible to keep units maintained that are frequently out in the
field for months at a time - Some responsibility should be
considered for the drivers and a proper system of reporting and
resolution should be set up to efficiently handle the problems and
repairs
Tire Failure
Statistics
-
90 percent of all
failures can be directly attributed to improper air pressure, road
hazards, or a combination of both
-
59 percent of
failed tires were due to belt separations and other mechanical
issues
-
27 percent failed
due to road hazards such as impacts, nails etc.
-
6 percent of
failures attributed to repair failures
-
6 - 10 percent of
failures were manufacturer related**
**Tire adjustments for
failures are very disproportioned in the tire industry. Meaning more
tires are adjusted than there should be because to most dealers, it is
easier to adjust a tire for a customer and hope for a return on future
business than it is to lose a customer over one tire issue. This
unfortunately exacerbates problems in the end because it does not allow
for fleets to confront and correct issues that are costing them money. |
